Treasures & Such Benefits from Generosity of Local Church

In early 2000, parishioner Gracie Ferraro, with pastor Msgr. Andrew Karg’s  help, proposed to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Erie, PA 7:00 a.m. daily Mass participants with the idea to help others with donations of money to assist local charities during the Christmas season.
Initially attendees gave pennies and loose change that they had that day. What evolved, as time went on, was a little red and white bucket that sits on the table in the lobby before the daily 7:00 a.m. liturgy.

Heidi Arnold, a retiree and parishioner, has become the “keeper of the bucket”. She faithfully puts out the bucket and retrieves it each day and counts and records the daily offerings. As the end of the year approaches, she asks participants to suggest organizations that would benefit from the contributions. Anyone in the group can suggest an organization. Once the suggestions are in, Heidi researches each organization and gives each worshipper a paper that lists the various organizations with a brief description of what they do.  After some discussion, they determine the amounts to give each one based on what was collected that year.

Jean Verdeccia recommended our own Treasures & Such as her cousin Tish Szczesny volunteers at the store on a regular basis and had shared the mission. Treasures & Such received a generous gift from the “bucket” which was used to purchase items that cannot be obtained through food stamps such as: laundry detergent, toilet paper and soaps.

We are grateful to the Our Lady of Peace 7:00 a.m. daily Mass group for their generosity to Treasures & Such and all the Erie organizations they have touched.  They certainly are an example of the old saying, “From little things, large things grow!”
