Treasures & Such: What's happening?

What's happening?

Many people are asking about Treasures & Such, Saint Benedict Education Center’s “incentive store”.  Is it open?  Will it open?  What is happening now in the store?  Are you taking donations?

The store is not open at the present time.  It will re-open at some point, in a way that reflects the daily operations at SBEC.  Currently, most of the interaction between participants and case managers, instructors, and other staff is by phone and on-line – remotely.  When a client comes to meet with their case manager or an instructor at SBEC the interaction is pre-arranged, by appointment, and carefully controlled.   Very specific and detailed protocols are followed by both staff and client.  [See “From the inside” from the Story Archive on SBEC website.]

One of the conversations taking place now concerning the store’s re-opening is how to arrange for the availability of scheduled store volunteers that intersect with the availability of a participant.  A significant component of this is the rapidly changing situations we face.  Will the schools be open or not?  Does a client still have a job?  Can they accept an offer of employment?  Are they preparing to be evicted? How and where is the virus spreading?  What directives are being offered by the State?   All of this and much more impact a participant’s presence at SBEC – which also impacts their availability to shop at the store.  How does this interface with the presence of a store volunteer?

Specific protocols for the store are also being developed.  These are using the basic pattern for the agency with additional details that pertain specifically to store operations.  Questions dealing with the use of Benny Bucks (SBEC”s token economy system), the types of items available in the store that can be sanitized easily after each shopper, and how to arrange a volunteer/shopping schedule are some of the concerns that are being addressed.  There are many others.

Another larger question is that of incentives.  Great care was given to create an “incentive program” that acknowledged the accomplishments of SBEC clients and offered encouragement in incremental and relevant ways.  [See “Everyone needs affirmation” from the Story Archive on SBEC website.]  How can this be done now in our current reality?  Credit to be used for shopping in Treasures & Such is a piece of this broader incentive question that is being considered.

Returning to the question, “Is the store open?”  No, but it will be once the organizational details are completed and a plan can be implemented that, as much as possible, can offer a safe interaction.

Donations?  We are not accepting anything at the present time.  When we do accept donations in the future we will only take “hard-surface” items that can easily be sanitized.  If you have such items to donate now and can store them for a future time please do.  This would be greatly appreciated.

Treasures & Such will open again – though we know not when.  What is known is that the store will be open in a new and different way and that it will continue to respond to the basic needs of SBEC participants.  To a large extent your interest and support make this possible.  Thank you.
