E.F. Smith Quality of Life Learning Center

For more than 10 years, E.F. Smith Quality of Life Learning Center has partnered with SBEC to improve the literacy and employment prospects of those living in the Erie community. Quality of Life offers GED preparation for those needing a high school diploma and is a certified ESL (English as a Second Language) center.

Many of the participants at SBEC require such services as part of their job preparation curriculum. SBEC does not attempt to duplicate excellent programs and services that are offered elsewhere in the city. Rather, SBEC will partner with other agencies to provide a needed program that some of its students may require. “Quality of Life has become a valuable job readiness preparation/community service site for our participants. Partnering with Quality of Life enhances our ability to improve the services provided to our general population.” observes Judi Jaworski, supervisor of job development at SBEC.

Likewise, Quality of Life is grateful for the referrals received from SBEC and for the comprehensive job readiness programs it offers. “The staff at SBEC does great work” comments Gary Horton, executive director of the E.F. Smith Quality of Life Learning Center. “They have a reputation for successfully helping their clients. The staff is very qualified, committed to service, and manage their services and programs well.” Maureen Donnelly, community service coordinator at SBEC, works closely with the staff at Quality of Life “Maureen has been as valuable an asset to our organization as anyone on our own staff. She always looks to providing the best opportunities for her clients.”

Together, SBEC and Quality of Life, are making a difference in Erie by increasing the capacity for economic self-sufficiency of those they serve.
